How to configure a VPN on Linux ?

Here is a Step by Step guide on how to configure a VPN on Linux.

Step 1 : Open Terminal, Applications-> Terminal

Step 2 : Install network-manager-openvpn by using the following command in the terminal: 

sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome

Press Enter. (Enter password if needed)

Step 3 : You will be prompted: “Do you want to continue? Y/N” Type “Y” and hit Enter

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

Step 4 : Now download LimeVPN OpenVPN Settings here and extract it.

Click on Network Connections on the top right corner, and click on Edit Connections.

Click on Add and select Import a saved VPN configuration…

Step 5 : Your dialogue box will appear: Navigate to extracted folder from step 4 and select one file (with extension “.ovpn“) from the list. Click Open.

Step 6 : Under username type your VPN username, and under password the VPN Password and click Save. (Rest all the information will be automatically imported)

Step 7 : Click on Network Connections on the top right corner to bring up the connection menu. Expand VPN Connections and select the configured VPN. 

You are now connected to VPN.
